1995 Clairmont Rd. Building Renovation

On September 9, 2018, Decatur City announced that it would be moving from weekly set up and tear down at the Emory Conference Center to being non-portable for the first time through a multi-year lease of an old church.

For the four months leading up to this I led a small team who had been spending most of our days evaluating the cost and planning the scope of the project. What followed was four quick months of one of the most unique renovation projects that I've ever seen. And when it was all said and done, we learned, innovated, and adapted more than I thought possible.

Drawing inspiration from other old spaces that had been revamped for new uses like Ponce City Market and The Tabernacle we attempted to maximize the character of the space while accepting our limitations—turning flaws into features. When we approached the design process we knew we had some significant limitations because it was only a five year lease and over half of our budget was already committed to deferred maintenance. While being what was essentially the general contractor for a multi-million dollar renovation was never something I anticipated, it’s one of the projects I’m most proud of—despite it being one of most difficult I’ve ever led.

We put this design piece together to give guests insight into the history of the space, the details of the project, and the impact of the transformation.

Time Capsule Account

As we approached the one year anniversary of the opening of the building, I wanted a way to both publicly document some of the behind-the-scenes details of the renovation and highlight all the vendors, craftsmen, and artists who help bring the project to life. What resulted was a time capsule Instagram account to commemorate the anniversary.
